Rotan Jr. High School

Texas Educator Excellence Grant

Report for Rotan ISD SBDM committee meeting

October 3, 2006

Rotan Junior High School has qualified for the Texas Educator Excellence Grant. Through this grant, junior high personnel will receive $40,000 to be used as incentive pay. This grant is based on TAKS scores and the rate of economically disadvantaged students. Figures from 2004-2005 school year were used to determine which campuses qualified. The amount an individual will receive is based on student performance on the TAKS for 2006-2007.

The grant program consists of two parts. Part I allows 75% of the total sum ($30,000) to be used as incentive pay for classroom teachers. Teachers on the campus plan developed the plan themselves. Incentives can be earned using three criteria:

  1. This year’s TAKS scores will be compared with last year’s state averages. If sixth grade math scores, for instance, are below or equal to the state rate from 2006, the sixth grade math teacher will receive $1000. If those scores are 1-5 % points above last year’s state average, the teacher will receive $1250. If those scores are more than 5 points higher than last year’s state average, the teacher will receive $1500.
  2. Incentive amounts will also be based on the performance of targeted students. Targeted students were determined by their performance on a practice TAKS exam (released test). If 50% or less of the targeted students in eight grade science pass the TAKS, then the eighth grade science teacher would receive $1000. If 50-75% of the targeted students pass the TAKS in science the teacher will receive $1250. If more than 75% of the targeted students in science pass the TAKS, then the teacher will receive $1500.
  3. The next criterion is based on collaboration. Teachers are encouraged to collaborate with other individuals concerning student performance, discipline issues, planning, etc. These collaborative sessions are to be documented, and the documentation to be kept on file. Teachers who participate in less than 24 collaborative sessions will receive $500. Those who participate in more than 24 sessions will receive $750.

Part II of the plan provides financial incentives to other campus personnel. Under part II, 25 percent of the funds ($10,000) is to be used to provide incentive to other personnel (aides, counselor, secretary, custodian, principal, etc.) Participants may earn up to $1666. Incentives are earned in two ways:

  1. Have successfully completed all in-service requirements. ($1000)
  2. Participate in 24 or more collaborative sessions. ($666)

A contingency plan was also developed whereby unused funds would be evenly distributed between participants.
